Ernie was head of the Technology Policies Unit in the Strategic Affairs Office, serving the Office of the President of Brazil. He was formerly Director of the Brazilian Association of Industrial Research Institutions. He gained his BS ChE cum laude at Washington University, and his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania, USA.
Ernie traveled to the US periodically to attend meetings of various organizations. He also presented papers and conducted seminars during these visits. He was really involved in the future of Brazil and would have been proud to see the Olympics come to Rio.
For those of us who went to Aspen with the JBS Schneelos Ski Club during spring break in ’62, Ernie was a joy to be with. His excitement at being on the trip and the wonderful attitude he had about all his experiences with our class really helped set the tone many times. In later years, it was always wonderful to see him in St. Louis when he came to visit the Smiths. He really was a difference maker.
